Privacy Policy
Copyright 2002 by Ronald B. Standler
In the following privacy policy,
I, me or my refers to Ronald B. Standler;
you or your refers to anyone who accesses one or more documents
at www.rbs2.com/.
Information Collected
The only information that is automatically collected from visitors
to www.rbs2.com/ is a standard logfile that contains:
- visitor's numeric IP address, assigned by your Internet Service Provider,
- date and time of the visit,
- the filename of my webpage that was visited,
- the URL from which the visitor came
(i.e., a referring link or search engine query),
- the web browser used by the visitor (e.g., Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, etc.)
and the operating system used by the visitor.
Logfiles containing such information are commonly produced
by webhosting services, so the collection of such information is
usual and customary on the Internet.
The logfile does not identify individual visitors to a website.
I only look at the raw logfiles to investigate a malfunction or
security problem. Routinely, I am only interested in statistical
summaries of the data in the logfiles.
I use the analog
program to analyze logfiles for my website to determine:
- the total number of requests for each of my webpages, and
- who is linking to each of my webpages.
No Cookies
I have never used cookies at my website and I have no intention
of using cookies in the future. Indeed, I regard the practice of
writing to a cookie file on another person's computer (without his/her
explicit permission) as a kind of trespass on his/her computer.
Confidentiality of E-Mail
Any e-mail sent to Dr. Standler will be kept confidential,
provided that the e-mail contains neither:
- a threat to do substantial bodily harm to a person,
- a proposal or offer for either a criminal or fraudulent act,
- malicious computer code, such as a computer virus or worm, nor
- advertisements for products or services that were sent to many different
e-mail addresses: so-called junk e-mail, unsolicited commercial
e-mail, or spam.
By confidential, I mean that I will neither:
- forward your e-mail to any person,
- show a copy of your e-mail to any person,
- disclose your name to any person, nor
- disclose your e-mail address to any person,
unless you explicitly consent in writing, or unless I receive
a subpoena from a court for the material.
I will cooperate with your attorney in quashing such a subpoena,
or in getting a protective order for the disclosed e-mail.
If your e-mail inquires about the possibility of me being your attorney,
then the law regards the content of your e-mail as privileged,
even though an attorney-client relationship has not yet been formed.
(Restatement Third of The Law Governing Lawyers
§ 15;
§ 59, comment c;
§ 70; and
§ 72.)
Mailing Lists & Solicitations
The only names/addresses in my e-mail program's address book are those of
clients, colleagues, vendors, and friends to whom I frequently send e-mail.
If you send one or two e-mails to me, I will not enter your
e-mail address in my address book,
unless you become either a client, vendor, or friend.
I neither purchase, sell, exchange, nor give e-mail addresses from/to anyone.
I have never sent bulk e-mail (i.e., identical e-mail messages to
many addresses) and I do not intend to send bulk e-mail.
Not more than once per year, I may send a one-page letter via U.S. Post Office
mail to prospective clients, particularly local attorneys who may be
interested in using my consulting services.
I make my own mailing list from names and addresses that I find in
public sources, such as the Internet and the telephone Yellow Pages.
I have never used banner advertisements at my website and I have no intention
of using banner advertisements in the future.
Links to Other Websites
Many of my essays contain links to other websites, as a
convenience to readers of my essays.
If you click on a link to another website, you are
obviously subject to the privacy policy of that website.
