My Hourly Rate
Beginning in January 2015, I temporarily stopped accepting new clients,
owing to my health problems.
I hope to resume legal consulting sometime in the future.
I have different hourly rates to reflect the amount of competition
and my experience in different areas.
- representation of my legal client in Massachusetts,
Owing to my worsening hearing impairment, in 2015 I stopped accepting new clients
in my practice of law in Massachusetts.
- consulting to litigators, typical services include:
- discussing litigation strategy
- scientific evidence in torts
- drafting deposition questions
- drafting document requests
- preparing written summaries of discovery
US$ 250/hour plus expenses.
- scientific or engineering consulting, typically on either:
- design or application of surge arresters or surge suppressors
- damage by lightning
US$ 300/hour plus expenses.
- legal research for licensed attorneys, typically on either:
- torts involving technology
- academic issues in higher-education law
- copyright law
- factual research in physics, meteorology, electrical engineering, medicine,
engineering standards, and patents.
- family law topics listed in my webpage.
US$ 175/hour plus expenses, and a written guarantee of at least $7500/year in
payments to me during the first year of the business relationship.
I do not charge for subscription costs of Westlaw databases.
During 1998-2014, I sometimes worked as a testifying expert witness
for a litigator. I no longer serve as a testifying expert witness.
I do not have any minimum billing, per day or per job.
If I travel to your location for a week of consulting and you only use
my services for two hours on Tuesday, my invoice for Tuesday will
contain only two hours.
If you are willing to guarantee a minimum of 500 hours/year of work,
then I will give a 25% discount on the above-mentioned hourly rates.
Expenses
I never ask for reimbursement of routine office expenses, including
Westlaw subscription fees, postage for letters in the USA,
and small numbers of photocopies.
Reimbursable expenses include:
- courier services (e.g., United Parcel Service, Federal Express, Express Mail)
- freight charges (e.g., United Parcel Service)
- more than 50 pages/month of photocopies
- document delivery services for photocopies of articles not available at
local libraries
- printing cases or statutes for legal research clients at US$ 0.03/page
- actual charges for use of computer databases (e.g., search on Dialog),
but not Westlaw subscription fees
- actual cost of travel
I routinely fly via the least-expensive, nonrefundable, economy airfare.
However, on long flights (more than 6 hours scheduled in one airplane),
I might use business class or discounted first-class, whichever is less expensive.
If our business work includes a Friday or Monday, and we can plan in advance,
so that a significantly less expensive airfare that requires a Saturday night
stay is available, then I am willing to stay through a Saturday night.
The money saved on airfare can more than offset the costs of my food and
lodging for the extra days.
Other Terms
Standler will send an itemized invoice each month for my time and expenses during the
previous 30 days. This invoice is due and payable when received.
Standler does not ask for a retainer (i.e., advance payment),
but the Client and Standler do agree to the following terms:
- To encourage prompt payment, and to recognize the time-value of money,
the Client agrees to pay interest at 0.0383 %/day, compounded daily —
equivalent to 15 %/year yield —
on all invoices that are not paid within 30 days of the invoice date.
- Client agrees to reimburse Standler for his costs in collecting a delinquent
account, including all reasonable attorney's fees and all reasonable expenses.
An account is delinquent if the total payments to Standler
during any three consecutive months are less than 1/2 of the balance due
at the beginning of the three-month interval.
